The Top ECM – organised by the Selangor Information Technology and ECommerce Council (SITEC) – is the largest event of its kind in Malaysia.

This year’s awards ceremony, conducted virtually, was officiated by Selangor Chairman of Standing Committees for Investment, Industry & Commerce and SME Dato’ Teng Chang Khim and graced by Dato’ Hasan Azhari Idris, Chief Executive Officer of Invest Selangor, Mr Lim Kee Yeong, Executive Director, Enterprise Banking of AFFIN BANK; and Mr Yong Kai Ping, Chief Executive of SITEC.

Teng announced that the awards this year received a total of 162 applications, an increase of 27% compared to 128 applicants in 2019.

“Since the first awards in 2016, Top ECM typically received between 100 to 125 participants per year. The numbers for the 2020 submission – which opened from 15 September to 18 October 2020 – has surpassed previous records.

“The shortlisted e-merchants had demonstrated that they had met the minimum threshold of RM25,000 in sales or 100 orders per month,” said Teng in his opening speech today.

The increase in participation reflects the booming e-commerce sector, especially after the Movement Control Order (MCO) was imposed in March as well as the recent reimposition of the Conditional MCO, where the business community has had to embrace digitalisation to cope with office closures, restricted movement and supply interruption.

“Selangor’s status as the country’s e-commerce hub has also been proven yet again with 54.7% of the shortlisted participants coming from the Klang Valley,” added Teng.

Lim Kee Yeong, Executive Director of Enterprise Banking, who represented AFFIN BANK in this event commended SITEC’s foresight in establishing this prestigious endeavour which he said is a hallmark to uplift startups to strengthen the e-commerce ecosystem in Malaysia.

“AFFIN BANK has always been a strong supporter of SMEs in Malaysia, with a special fondness to the startups segment. Our aim is to nurture and strengthen the SME ecosystem from the beginning of their journey as a startup, to growth and expansion into matured SMEs.

“Being the backbone of the Malaysian economy, SMEs should be provided with required assistance and encouragement to ensure their sustainability, especially while weathering the difficulties caused by the current pandemic.

“Our SME Colony mobile application is a testament to our many initiatives that support the SMEs. This multiple award-winning digital initiative is a comprehensive business resources centre for SMEs to improve business knowledge, enhance financial well-being and expand commercial networking.”
