Frequently asked questions
What types of companies are eligible to apply for grants under the Malaysia Semiconductor IC Design Park incentives?
The grants are open to both local and international companies within the semiconductor industry, with a focus on IC design, R&D, prototyping, and technology-driven manufacturing. Companies should demonstrate a strong commitment to establishing operations in Malaysia and aligning with the park’s strategic goals, including technology development, innovation, and workforce expansion.
What is the grant coverage period, and what expenses are eligible for support?
The grant covers expenses for up to three years. Eligible expenses include office rental, essential infrastructure, equipment, tools, and talent development initiatives, including recruitment, training, and upskilling. Subsidy amounts and coverage percentages vary based on the specific needs and potential impact of each applicant.
How do I submit an expression of interest (EOI) for the grant application?
To submit an EOI, email the secretariat at MICDPark@sidec.com.my with the subject line “Expression of Interest: Malaysia Semiconductor IC Design Park.” Include basic information about your company’s background and your specific interest in participating in the initiative. Following the EOI submission, eligible companies will be invited to an initial discussion.
What information should I include in my formal application?
The formal application should include details on your company’s background, financial information, current business model, proposed Malaysian business model, technology or product ownership, requested support, milestones, and financial projections. Supplementary information like patents, IP ownership, and case studies of previous projects are also highly recommended to strengthen your application.
How long does the evaluation process take, and what does it involve?
The evaluation process typically takes 4-6 weeks. Applicants will first be invited to a 30-minute presentation to the Approval Taskforce, where they will share their business plans, technical strengths, and proposed contributions to the semiconductor industry. After the session, the taskforce provides recommendations to the Chairman, who makes the final decision.
Can the grant funds be used for overseas training or other international activities?
Yes, up to 100% subsidy support is available for approved overseas training, provided it aligns with the company’s IC design or semiconductor development objectives. Such training must adhere to global industry standards and directly contribute to workforce skills enhancement within the company.
Are there any limitations on the number of grants a single company can apply for?
Each company is eligible for one primary grant, which encompasses support in multiple areas like rental subsidies, equipment, and talent development. However, additional grants for specific technology co-development or IP creation may be negotiable depending on the company’s impact on the Malaysian semiconductor ecosystem.
What post-approval support is available to companies that receive grants?
Approved companies, or “tenants,” gain access to a range of post-approval support, including mentorship programs, collaboration opportunities, and shared access to cutting-edge Electronic Design Automation (EDA) tools and infrastructure. The park’s secretariat will work with each tenant to ensure that all initial setup, training, and collaboration needs are addressed.
What criteria does the Approval Taskforce consider when evaluating applications?
Yes, companies from related fields are encouraged to apply if they can demonstrate a viable plan for transitioning into semiconductor IC design or related areas. The evaluation team will assess the company’s preparedness, proposed training and upskilling plans, and alignment with the park’s strategic objectives before making a decision.
